Most of the existing circuits are composed on a substrate of silicon material. In order to form a loop, chemical engineering that dissolves the surface is required, which may cause environmental problems during the manufacturing process. Environmental issues must also be considered when destroying circuit chips that have reached the end of their life.

The research team succeeded in putting and launching ultra-small optical components with a width of 500 nanometers on paper. It has been previously believed that an optical component, as a component that senses light, does not function properly when it is scattered by light on a rough surface. Professor Zhao found through experiments that if the fiber (cellulose) filament on the surface of the paper is smaller than the size of the light element, this can show high performance even if the light element is placed.

Professor Zhao said, “As the demand for electronic products increases, the number of alternating cycles is gradually shortening, and the number of circuits that must be discarded is increasing sharply.” He said, “The technology developed this time combines low-cost paper with high-performance optical components.
