Diamond-graphene hybrid nanofiller for improving epoxy heat conduction

Recently, Korean researchers designed and used nanodiamond (ND) hybrid graphene (graphitenanoplatelets, GNPs) to prepare nanocomposites (ND@GNPs), which are toughened with epoxy resin (EP) matrix. The preparation of thermosetting composites with stable physical properties and excellent thermal conductivity can be used in the electronics and automotive industries.

The thermal conductivity of polymer-based materials is the key to its application. The results show that the addition of boron nitride, silicon carbide, alumina and other ceramic particle fillers is less effective in improving the thermal conductivity of composites than carbon-based fillers. Nano-diamond can enhance heat transfer and heat dissipation, and can also increase interface interaction and improve the thermophysical properties of composite materials.

Through experiments, the team selected nano-diamonds with a particle size of less than 1μm and graphene with a thickness of less than 100nm for hybridization, and then dispersed the composite at 20wt% (mass concentration) in the epoxy resin matrix, and the thermal conductivity increased by 1231%.
