In terms of lubricating properties, oil-based cutting fluids are more lubricious than water-based cutting fluids. However, the cooling effect of the aqueous cutting fluid is significantly better than that of the oil-based cutting fluid. In general, slow cutting requires higher lubricity of the cutting fluid. When the cutting speed is lower than 30 m/min, cutting oil is required. The emulsion combines the lubricity and rust resistance of the oil with the cooling property of water, so that high-speed, low-pressure metal cutting with high heat generation is effective.

Cutting oil with extreme pressure additive is effective for cutting of any material when the cutting speed is not higher than 60m/min. In high-speed cutting, due to the large amount of heat generation, the heat-dissipating effect of the oil-based cutting fluid is poor, which may cause the temperature in the cutting zone to be too high to cause smoke and fire. In addition, because the workpiece temperature is too high, it is prone to thermal deformation, which affects the machining accuracy of the workpiece.

Compared with oil-based cutting fluids, emulsions have the advantages of greater heat dissipation, cleaning and economy, which are beneficial to the operator's hygiene and safety. Therefore, metal processing plants are more willing to use emulsions. In fact, in addition to materials that are particularly difficult to process, the emulsion can be used in almost all light and medium-duty cutting operations and most heavy-duty machining. The emulsion can also be used for complex grinding such as thread grinding and groove cutting. All the grinding processes outside, the disadvantage of the emulsion is that it is easy to cause bacteria and mold to multiply, and the active ingredients in the emulsion are chemically decomposed to cause odor and deterioration. Therefore, an organic bactericide with low toxicity should generally be added.

The advantages of chemically synthesized cutting fluids are economical, fast heat dissipation, strong cleaning and excellent workpiece visibility, easy control of processing size, and stability and anti-corrosion ability stronger than emulsion. Poor lubricity, which can cause sticking and wear of moving parts of the machine, and the viscous residue left by chemical synthesis can affect the movement of the machine parts and cause rust on the overlapping faces of these parts.
