US car sales increased by 6% in January

Affected by the rebound in volume sales, the overall sales of the US auto market in January increased by 6% year-on-year to 698,990 units.

Ford's US light vehicle sales in January increased 25% year-on-year to 116,534 units. In January 2009, Ford America sold 93,506 units.

Toyota Motor was affected by the recall. In January, light vehicle sales in the US market fell 16% to 98,796 units – the first monthly sales in less than 100,000 units in a few years.

General Motors sales increased 14% to 146,315 units. GM also expects seasonally adjusted January-to-year sales to be between 11 million and 11.3 million units, roughly equivalent to sales in the fourth quarter of 2009.

Honda’s US sales in January fell 5% to 67,479 units. Although car sales increased by 2.7%, sales of light goods vehicles fell 15%. Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. announced that its car sales increased 15% to 62,572 units. The company also said it expects market share to increase significantly.

Chrysler's US sales in January fell 8% to 57,143 units.
