The Japanese noodles that can be eaten in space have been made

Since 2009, Japan will supply astronauts to the International Space Station with 28 kinds of Japanese dishes such as ramen, curry rice, and squid cooked with Japanese bean jam.

These dishes have all been approved by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. Lihua Song Yi, an official at the agency, said: "Space foods have many restrictions. For example, there are no refrigerators in space, and foods must be guaranteed to remain in place for a long time under normal temperature conditions. ."

Lihua said that space foods mainly include lyophilized foods, steamed bagged foods and canned foods, and lyophilized foods need to be added with hot water when they are eaten. The packaging of space foods also has special requirements, requiring no breakage under the pressure and temperature changes of the space station, but also keeping the seal after hot water and other high-temperature liquids are injected.

Space station astronauts eat four meals a day. Drinks and soup are ready-to-drink. Solid foods are eaten with spoons. Foods must be specially processed and have a certain consistency to ensure that they do not spread in a weightless environment.

Japan’s Nisshin Foods Co., Ltd. is a partner in the development of space foods. The company’s founder and inventor of instant noodles, Ando Babfu, vowed in 2001 “to allow astronauts to eat in space above.” After repeated trials, Nissin made ramen noodles that could be swallowed, and coated the surface of the ball with egg white. Therefore, even if it was poured with hot water, the ball would not be deformed and spread. This surface ball also uses a special packaging bag to solve the problem of preservation at room temperature.

Officials at the Japan Aerospace Exploration and Development Agency said that new technologies can be used not only for the production of space foods, but also for a wider range of applications, such as the production of specialty foods for people suffering from osteoporosis and bedridden patients.

Currently, only Russia and the United States supply food to the International Space Station. Food is repeated about every two weeks. Some astronauts hope to increase food diversity. Japan once supplied Japanese-style grilled octopus balls and grilled chicken skewers to the space station, but that was just a snack for astronauts, not for dinner.

The International Space Station began construction in 1998. It is located 400 kilometers from the ground in space. A total of 15 countries participate in the construction of a manned experimental space capsule called "Hope." The space station is still under construction and is scheduled to be completed in 2010.
