LG Display mass-produces the world's first bendable plastic electronic paper

LG Display announced today that it will begin mass production of the world's first plastic electronic paper display (EPD). The product specifications are 6-inch, XGA-class (1024X768) resolution. The main feature is the first use of plastic electronic ink substrate instead of traditional glass substrate, which can resist large bending.

This plastic electronic paper will bring consumers and paper books a similar reading experience, the thickness of the plastic substrate used is equivalent to a mobile phone protective film, compared with the same size and resolution of the glass electronic screen paper screen, the thickness of the thin More than 1/3 is 0.7mm, lighter than 1/2, 14g. In addition, this product can be bent about 40 degrees in the center of the screen without damage.

It is understood that about 10% of users of e-books will be damaged due to accidental drop or impact. LG Display's plastic electronic paper screen passed the vertical drop test of standing reading height (about 1.5 meters) and the vertical squat test of a small urethane hammer, resulting in no damage at all.

As electronic paper screens become lighter, thinner, and more durable, e-books have not only lower eye fatigue, lower power consumption, but also more price competitive advantages over smart tablets, tablet PCs, and other products.

Because of the low heat resistance of plastic substrates, it is difficult to apply them to existing production projects. To overcome this difficulty, LG Display began researching in October 2010 and spent nearly two years, and will produce 350 LCD panels in general. Above the high temperature TFT project successfully applied to plastic materials, and began mass production with exclusive technology.
